Rationale:
Before I began this course I had no knowledge of the practices or techniques used in games design or any idea how much planning, effort and dedication goes into a video game. During the first year of the course we learnt a lot of techniques and I’ll admit I haven’t used all of the different things we’ve learnt but understand where they can be applied and used effectively. I’ve learnt several methods on how to texture models, build levels, add audio and generally build and strengthen my knowledge in programs I had no idea how to use at the start of the course. I believe I have become more ambitious but still remaining sensible when undertaking large project since I want to create something impressive but also manageable in the time frame we have been given. During the last project I decided to finally build up my knowledge with 3DS MAX and are glad that I pushed through a few painful hours learning the program, because now I’m fairly comfortable using it and I am sure I’ll use it heavily during Unit 13.
Project Concept:
In this project I want to produce a survival game with a single objective at the end. The game will be set in a large scale WW1 underground tunnel system and be filled with zombies and different obstacles to overcome liked locked and coded doors that require passwords. You will play as a soldier that’s has been sent in to retrieve certain files or information. I will mainly be using Unreal Engine to produce this leveraging geometry to produce large assets with little detail like grey-box walls and floors and use 3ds max to produce smaller but more detailed assets like pipes, foliage and machinery. I will use Photoshop to build textures and decals that I can use effectively to create a believable and interesting game. I will need to research and learn how to produce certain items and systems. I will receive and use feedback off of my peers and tutors to improve my work and create a stronger and more impressive game, understanding what others on my course would like to see and try and incorporate these features in my project. I will be able to work inside and outside of college and use my time efficiently constructing my game and I think as long as I keep a steady and consistent pace during this project I won’t become overwhelmed or stuck during this project.
Evaluation:
During Unit 13 I will produce a blog, and I will try and update it daily giving an insight on what I’ve produced, learnt and if any obstacles got in the way and how I overcame them. I will record decision making and compromises I’ve had to make and why I think they were necessary. I will explain why I’ve made certain decisions and why I think they were beneficial to my project and why I believe my game has improved because of it. I will reflect on feedback given to me by my tutors and peers and how this may or may not impact certain decisions I’ll have to make and the possible effect it’ll have on the production on my game. I’ll refer back to stated aims and clarify why and why not I’ve decided or not to go forward with them explaining in detail now if they still seem a viable choice or a bad idea that I’m happy I didn’t go through with.
