Since the first ever time I begun playing video games during my childhood, I have had a keen interest in games and enjoyed spending my free time playing them. I love the way games can interact with the person playing with them and how you can become so immersed in the world and characters involved in it that you start to see the characters as real people.
I have chosen to study BSc (Hons) Games Production because I believe that my passion and interest in games paired with a University degree will allow me to go far in the games industry and possibly even produce top selling games. I studied a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Games Design and thoroughly enjoyed the course because of the freedom it gave me during our projects, it didn’t hold us to any strong restrictions and gave me a lot of flexibility to experiment with different methods. At college I learned how to model assets and create environments using different programs. I both worked in groups and by myself allowing me to gain experience in both areas. I enjoyed giving and receiving feedback from fellow students telling me how I could possibly improve or adjust my projects to improve them aesthetically and what other games and films I could draw inspiration from. At college we use Unreal Engine 4, 3DS MAX, Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office, for different areas of producing our projects and become comfortable with the use of these programs to produce models and textures to use in the games we produce.
I believe during my time at college I have learned a lot and during projects would even spend hours at home perfecting certain environments and models if I thought they could be improved and adjusted. I also spent free time designing, drawing characters and pictures that I could use in future games annotating them with notes and thoughts of possible roles they could play and what they could suggest in the setting I placed them in. I recorded certain methods we learned that I know would be useful in the future and found more effective and time saving ways to produce assets without the quality declining.
I work weekends at a chicken farm collecting and packing eggs, which I think improved my time management and working quickly but effectively and helped my social skills communicating with people I wouldn’t usually talk too. I used to attend Cubs and Scouts every Thursday in Coddington, we would go camping every few months at places like PGL and spend a couple of days there doing different activities such as Rock Climbing and Rafting and helped me socialise and improve my confidence with other people my age. I take driving lessons once a week for an hour because I think being able to drive while I’m at University will allow me a lot more freedom since I won’t have to rely on other people to drive me around and I’ll be able to rely on myself to get to places.
I’m choosing this course because I think it’s the next step in allowing me to work in an industry that I’ve always wanted too. I love the idea of being able to produce games with my own ideas and input that could be made to a professional standard and that people could play and enjoy.
